Cognitive Endurance for the Modern Operator: Introducing the VALOR Program

Recognizing the intense need for cognitive endurance and performance in the SOF community, the Military Special Operations Family Collaborative is partnering with Dr. Megan Vaughan at iPerformance Labs to offer the VALOR Program — Vital Awareness for Lifelong Operator Resilience — a cognitive performance pilot program built specifically for the demands of the SOF career and lifestyle.

Why Cognitive Performance, and Why Now

The unique organizational structures and mission requirements of Special Operations Forces create stressors not typically encountered by general purpose military units. SOF operates within a distinct occupational stress environment — one that presents peculiar performance and leadership challenges at every level of service, from tactical to operational to strategic.

Prolonged stress without recovery, compounded by chronic sleep disruption and repeated or undiagnosed brain injuries, impairs critical brain functions: attention, memory, emotion regulation, and leadership capacity. Left unaddressed, these impairments undermine both mission effectiveness and long-term well-being. When paired with difficulty disengaging from overthinking or internal self-criticism — “getting stuck in your head” — these tendencies can interfere with recovery, adaptability, and cognitive control.

What Makes VALOR Different

VALOR is not a medical or clinical program. It’s a skill-development program, targeting cognitive performance as it relates to professional and personal growth — designed specifically around the demands of the SOF career, not a generic wellness curriculum retrofitted for the military.

That specificity comes from deep experience. Dr. Vaughan brings more than a decade of expertise in brain injury and cognitive communication in special operations. She’s a certified brain injury specialist with a focus on autonomic rehabilitation, integrative medicine, and cognitive optimization. During her doctoral work at Northwestern University, she developed the Mindfulness-Based Communication Enhancement Program — a multi-site intervention for active-duty Special Forces operators that resulted in statistically significant improvements in memory, attention, empathy, and emotional intelligence. She currently chairs Complementary Integrative Rehabilitation Medicine at the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and leads a task force on integrative medicine techniques, including biofeedback, somatic integration, and neuroplasticity, for enhancing SOF performance. Altogether, she has trained or treated over 450 special operators, accumulating more than 50,000 hours working directly with this community.

Built Around the SOF Career Arc

Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, VALOR is segmented to meet operators at precise moments in their career and transition:

  • New to SOF (0–4 years): Focus on cognitive stamina, sleep, emotional regulation, identity and purpose, connection, and word finding.
  • Midgrade (5–9 years): Emphasis on word finding, identity and purpose, and emotional regulation, alongside the tactical-to-management transition, urgent sleep intervention, organizational tools, and emotional regulation support.
  • Senior (12+ years): Cognitive stamina, sleep, emotional regulation, and mental organization, with attention to identity, word finding for high-stakes communication, and reframing emotional regulation.
  • Military Transition (17+ years / 7+ years post-transition): Cognitive stamina and stress load, plus cognitive performance awareness and stimulus management for navigating civilian and professional contexts, hypervigilance and social tolerance, meaning-making and purpose frameworks, grief support, and memory maintenance.

Each segment runs virtually, ranging from roughly 3 to 12 hours depending on the career stage and focus area.

For Individuals — and for Units

Individual service members and veterans who struggle with word recall, memory, focus, or cognitive control are encouraged to learn more about VALOR and sign up to receive program information.

Units can also host a virtual cohort for up to 15 service members at a time, with program cost dependent on the VALOR segment selected. All participants agree to pre- and post-program assessments; this de-identified data helps advance SOF-specific research, and participating units receive a special report on their cohort’s outcomes.

To actively rebuild memory skills within group sessions, dedication and active participation are required — this is the pathway to fortifying these brain functions and achieving the program’s goals.

What Operators Are Saying about the VALOR program

“I truly enjoyed this program and am grateful to be a part of the team. I thank Megan and team for the support and passionate outreach within the VALOR program. The weekly tasks provided me with another way of seeing the world and reinforced that everything will be ok. I am grateful for the tailored approach to each person. I will use various tools and thought mindfulness provided to aid in my purpose filled life. Thank you so much for this program!”

“Without this work, I would have been defeated, I would have probably checked out and gone back to wearing the ‘Everything is okay’ mask. Instead, I held onto hope and focused my attention on areas where I was seeing success.”

Sign up for VALOR as an Individual or for your Unit

If you’re a SOF service member or veteran struggling with word recall, memory, focus, or cognitive control, sign up here to receive program information. Units interested in hosting a cohort for Service members or families can contact us at home@msofc.org to plan a custom unit-specific VALOR program.
